What is a FOBT Kit?
A Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) is an at-home test that looks for hidden (occult) blood in your stool (fecal matter). Colon cancers, even early ones, tend to be fragile and bleed easily. The FOBT kit looks for trace amounts of blood in the stool, amounts that would not be visible to the naked eye.

If blood is found in the stool; however, it does not necessarily mean that you have cancer but that you should consult with your local physician. Hidden blood is sometimes a sign of polyps (growths) in your colon that may turn into cancer. Completing this test is important because even if you have a polyp, you may never feel symptoms—only screening can detect it.

Who should get screened?
Your individual risk factors – such as ethnicity, lifestyle and family history – will determine when you should start getting checked. For most adults, it is recommended that colon cancer screening should begin at age 50.

Why should I get screened for colon cancer?
Despite it being one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, there is a struggle for awareness of the disease and its prevention. When found early, it’s one of the most treatable cancers, but to be found people need to get screened.

Encouraging people to get screened is a big part of our battle, especially in Nebraska where only 62.1% of people over 50 get screened. That’s one of the lowest rates in the country.
