Survivor Story: Brittney W.
How were you diagnosed?:
Hi, my name is Brittney, and I was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer in September 2019. I really did not have any symptoms that would have me suspect I had colon cancer, except I was having occasional bright red bloody stools. I decided to go in for a colonoscopy to make sure everything was fine and during that time the doctor removed one single polyp and sent it in for testing. It came back cancerous, so then they decided to do an MRI to check to make sure nothing was missed and to my surprise they found spots on my liver! I was diagnosed on September 4, 2019, which was my first day back to work, as I was a school bus driver and we are off during the summer. It was one of the worst days of my life in a day I will never forget it.
What would you tell others about getting screened?:
Colon cancer is not prejudiced. There are more and more younger people being diagnosed with colon cancer, meaning we need to change the way screening is done and change the age for screening. If you ever suspect anything is going on, have lab work done and go to the doctor and he just can’t figure out why things are going on ask for a colonoscopy
Why do you fight back against colon cancer?
I am a mother of three beautiful children and they are my life. I will fight with all of my might to beat this, so I can be here for them
